Abstract

The article discusses a sculpture competition in Renaissance Florence in 1401 to create bronze panels for the baptistery doors. The competition between Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi ended in a tie, leading to Ghiberti's victory and subsequent fame in sculpture, while Brunelleschi turned to architecture. The article questions the accuracy of historical accounts and suggests that Ghiberti's simpler design may have been more suitable for the project, despite Brunelleschi's innovative approach. The fate of the other competitors and the reasons behind Brunelleschi's career shift remain unclear. [Extracted from the article]
