Abstract
The article focuses on an agreement between Chile's state copper supplier Codelco and Swiss commodities company Glencore Plc to potentially design, develop, and operate a new smelter in northern Chile. The project aims to process up to 1.5 million metric tons of copper annually in the Antofagasta region, with Codelco negotiating to supply 800,000 metric tons of semi-processed copper to the facility. Despite current market challenges, the initiative is driven by sustainability goals and the need to enhance smelting capacity in Chile, which has not seen a new smelter built in thirty years. A pre-feasibility study by Glencore is expected by the end of May, with construction projected to begin in 2030 and operations starting in 2032 or 2033. [Extracted from the article]
