Abstract

Mesa, Arizona has been recognized as the first Autism Certified City in the United States by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) for five years. The initiative was sparked by Visit Mesa's President and CEO, Marc Garcia, who aimed to create a safe and welcoming environment for neurodiverse travelers after a negative experience with his son who is on the autism spectrum. Over the past five years, 50 businesses and 7,921 community members have completed autism-specific training, showcasing Mesa's strong commitment to inclusivity. The city's dedication to accessibility and inclusion is highlighted through ongoing efforts, such as the launch of the Accessibility Champion Program, which aims to make Mesa one of the most accessible cities in the nation.
