Abstract
The article focuses on "MONUMENTS," an exhibition at The Brick and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles that examines Confederate monuments in the United States, highlighting their role as strategic tools for reinforcing racial hierarchies during the Jim Crow era and civil rights movement. The show contextualizes these statues within the Lost Cause ideology and features works by Black artists responding to or reinterpreting these monuments, notably Kara Walker’s "Unmanned Drone" (2023), which deconstructs the Stonewall Jackson statue. The exhibition also addresses the activism surrounding monument removals, though some critiques note a limited engagement with this history. Overall, "MONUMENTS" is presented as a significant curatorial effort that transforms these contested objects from symbols of authority into subjects of critical dialogue and reinvention.
