Abstract

This essay provides a practical introduction to Niklas Luhmann's sociological theory, focusing on his style of theory-building and its applicability to empirical social research, particularly historical investigations. Luhmann, a leading figure in German sociology, developed a general theory of society based on social systems theory, emphasizing communication over individual action and employing concepts such as autopoiesis, meaning, and system/environment distinctions. The essay highlights Luhmann’s departure from traditional subject-centered epistemologies toward a recursive, constructivist observation of society “from the inside,” advocating for a problem-driven engagement with his modular and abstract conceptual framework. Practical guidelines are offered for researchers to navigate Luhmann’s complex theory by reformulating personal questions and exploring key concepts to better understand social complexity without prescriptive or moralizing claims.
