Abstract

This article focuses on the filmmaking approach of Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin, particularly their 2023 comedy film Splitsville, which emphasizes fight-scene realism and draws inspiration from Italian comedies of the 1960s and 70s. Covino and Marvin prioritize in-camera stunt work without doubles, aiming to revive cinematic comedy with influences from classic filmmakers like Buster Keaton and commedia all’italiana directors such as Lina Wertmüller and Pietro Germi. Their work reflects a blend of screwball, slapstick, and farce, combined with bold visual styles and long tracking shots reminiscent of European cinema. Splitsville stars Covino, Dakota Johnson, Marvin, and Adria Arjona, and the filmmakers express interest in further exploring Italian cinematic aesthetics in future projects.
