Abstract
Switzerland's largest political party, the Swiss Peoples' Party (SVP), has expressed opposition to Swisscom AG's plans to acquire Vodafone Group Plc's Italian business for €8 billion. The SVP argues that as the Swiss Confederation is the majority shareholder of Swisscom, the government would ultimately be liable for any losses. However, the SVP's opposition may not hinder the deal, as major decisions in Switzerland are typically made independently of party lines. The Swiss government, which holds a 51% stake in Swisscom, has stated that it has considered the matter but declined to comment further as negotiations are ongoing. [Extracted from the article]
