Abstract
The article focuses on Roger II’s reign as king of Sicily, highlighting the mixed contemporary reactions to his rule and the complex political and cultural landscape of his kingdom. Crowned in 1130 by the pope during a papal schism, Roger faced opposition from much of Christendom, including the Holy Roman and Byzantine empires, as well as Italian maritime powers. Despite being a Norman ruler, Roger governed a diverse, multi-ethnic kingdom where Greeks and Muslims held significant influence, and his court and army reflected this multiculturalism. His capital, Palermo, was praised by the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi as a major metropolis, illustrating the kingdom’s unique blend of cultures amid the broader context of European crusading fervor.
