Abstract
The article reports on the overlooked history of Puerto Rican musicians in the Harlem Hellfighters Regimental Band during World War I and their lasting influence on jazz. Topics include the contributions of Rafael Hernández and his siblings as part of Puerto Rico's rich musical tradition, the lack of recognition of these musicians in mainstream jazz history such as Ken Burns' documentary, and the transformative partnership between Hernández and Black bandleader James Reese Europe.
