Abstract

The article focuses on how queer South African performance artist Tandile Mbatsha uses embodied, site-specific performance to interrogate postapartheid contradictions around gender, sexuality, ritual, and belonging. Topics include the reworking of Xhosa masculinity rites through queer performance, the use of the body and landscape as archives of memory and resistance, and the fusion of art, activism, and personal history in works such as "I AM."
