Abstract
This article provides a detailed examination of Mikhail Tugan-Baranovsky's 1916 seminal work *Social Foundations of Cooperation*, which offers a comprehensive economic and historical analysis of cooperatives—particularly producer and consumer cooperatives—and their operation within a capitalist environment. Despite its early insights into the social utility, economic limits, and life-cycle of cooperatives, Tugan's study remained largely overlooked in Western economic literature until the mid-20th century, when interest in labor-managed firms revived. The article situates Tugan's cooperative theory within his broader intellectual trajectory, highlighting his view of cooperatives as class-based economic enterprises inspired by socialist ideals but constrained by capitalist market forces, leading to tendencies of stagnation or transformation into capitalist firms. It also discusses Tugan's nuanced classification of cooperatives, his skepticism about their capacity to replace capitalism outright, and his recognition of cooperation's role in a gradual social transformation rather than immediate systemic change.
