Abstract
The article focuses on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s extensive and long-standing system designed to prevent organized opposition and dissent. It details the regime’s use of pervasive surveillance, infiltration, assassinations, imprisonment, and intimidation to suppress political activists, journalists, and opposition groups both inside Iran and abroad. Despite decades of repression, various opposition factions—including exiled royalist Reza Pahlavi, the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), and Kurdish political groups—continue to exist, though they often have conflicting agendas. Recent efforts toward unity among opposition groups have emerged, exemplified by the planned Iran Freedom Congress in London, which seeks peaceful political transition without military intervention.
