Abstract
The article focuses on how mature companies can overcome stagnation and achieve sustained breakout growth, defined as doubling peer sales growth for five years followed by above-industry growth for another five years. A global study of 848 companies identified 99 that successfully reignited growth through strategies such as scaling core businesses, reallocating toward fast-growing segments, refreshing business models, and breakthrough product innovation. Successful firms matched their growth strategies to industry conditions and leveraged crises or external pressures, including activist investor demands, to drive bold transformation. The article emphasizes that breakout growth requires aligning strategy with situational factors, building organizational capabilities, and creating urgency for change, often during times of disruption.
