Abstract

The article focuses on using the story of African American women, Henrietta Lacks and the HeLa cell line to teach VCE Biology students both key biological concepts and bioethical issues. It illustrates how HeLa cells demonstrate the arrest of apoptosis and cancer biology while engaging students in discussions on medical ethics, informed consent, racial inequities, and the historical and contemporary implications of scientific research.
