Abstract

The article focuses on a 2022 revival of Jean-Philippe Rameau's 1745 opera farce *Platée*, directed by Laurent Pelly and conducted by Marc Minkowski with Les Musiciens du Louvre and the Paris Opera chorus. The production features a tenor in drag, Lawrence Brownlee, in the title role of Platée, a vain but unattractive water nymph, whose performance is noted for its vocal brilliance and acting charm. The opera’s plot centers on Jupiter’s scheme to embarrass his jealous wife Juno by feigning affection for Platée. The staging combines imaginative sets and choreography with a lively interpretation of Rameau’s score, emphasizing humor and character individuality without imposing extraneous meanings beyond the libretto.
