Abstract

This article reviews "Songs of Orpheus," the debut recital album by American mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, featuring song cycles by Robert Spano, Claude Debussy, George Crumb, and Edvard Grieg. The album centers on existential themes such as life, death, love, and loss, highlighted by Spano's 2020 cycle Sonnets to Orpheus, composed for O'Connor. The recording showcases O'Connor’s versatility across French, German, English, and Norwegian texts, with Spano’s sensitive piano accompaniment reflecting diverse musical styles. The cycles include Debussy’s Chansons de Bilitis, Crumb’s Early Songs, and Grieg’s Haugtussa, each contributing distinct emotional and cultural perspectives. The album is noted for its thoughtful programming, excellent sound quality, and informative program notes. [Extracted from the article]
