Abstract
The article focuses on the 1625 loan of the English warship Vanguard and seven merchant vessels to France under King Charles I, examining the episode from a maritime perspective centered on Captain John Pennington's challenges. English sailors opposed serving under French command and resisted fighting against the Protestant Huguenots at La Rochelle, creating tensions exacerbated by contradictory orders from English authorities. Despite political scandal and accusations of conspiracy implicating the Duke of Buckingham, Pennington's correspondence reveals he was not complicit in subversion but rather caught between conflicting instructions and crew mutinies. The loan ultimately damaged Anglo-French relations and English Protestant interests, with the ships actively used against the Huguenots, contributing to Buckingham's impeachment efforts.
