Abstract

The article focuses on first-hand testimonies of Basque children exiled during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and their experiences of political repression under Franco's regime. It presents interviews with two individuals who, as children, were evacuated in 1937—one to the United Kingdom through the Basque Government's "expediciones infantiles" (children's expeditions) and another to France with her family. These accounts detail their journeys as refugees, the challenges of exile, and their difficult reintegration into Francoist Spain, where they faced social hostility and economic hardship due to their families' political affiliations. The testimonies also highlight the cultural and educational experiences during exile and the lasting impact of repression and memory on their lives.
