Abstract

This paper examines fine brushwork based on semiotics, using The Night Revels of Han Xizai, a long silk scroll featuring fine brushwork of figures, as an example to conduct analyses and discussions. The Night Revels of Han Xizai is one of the ten most famous paintings in the history of Chinese painting, depicting the banquet held by Han Xizai, a minister of the Southern Tang Dynasty. The painting is rich in content and diverse in form, and the picture is rigorously constructed and aesthetically pleasing. This paper will analyse the painting in light of the relevant theory of semiotics matrix modelling to propose a new interdisciplinary perspective on exploring the content and conception of fine brushwork.
