Abstract

This study examines the underrepresentation of women in supervisory and specialized police roles by analyzing survey data from 565 patrol officers in a large metropolitan agency. It explores how factors such as gender, race, tenure, job satisfaction, parenthood, and military experience influence officers' attitudes toward promotion, assignment to specialized units, and expected retirement rank. Findings indicate that female officers with prior military experience place greater importance on specialized unit assignments, while parenthood slightly reduces this importance for women. Additionally, women are more likely than men to anticipate retiring at the rank of detective. The study concludes with policy recommendations and suggestions for further research on gender disparities in policing career advancement.
