Abstract

This article recounts the 1990 Australian–American expedition that became the first to successfully climb K2, the world’s second-highest and one of the most challenging mountains, via its North Ridge on the China–Pakistan border. The team, including experienced climbers Greg Child, Greg Mortimer, Steve Swenson, and Phil Ershler, undertook a complex approach involving camels and a difficult glacier trek, choosing not to use bottled oxygen and relying on careful acclimatisation. Despite severe weather, avalanche risks, and extreme altitude challenges, the expedition established multiple high camps and made a final summit push amid deteriorating conditions. The narrative highlights the physical and psychological demands of climbing K2, the logistical complexities of the remote route, and the determination of the multinational team to achieve this significant mountaineering milestone.
