Abstract
This article examines the possible influence of Rudyard Kipling's 1904 story "Wireless" on T. S. Eliot's poem *The Waste Land*, particularly its second section, "A Game of Chess." It highlights detailed sensory descriptions in Kipling’s depiction of a chemist’s shop—such as the interplay of light, color, and scent—and draws parallels to Eliot’s imagery of refracted light, perfumes, and stained glass effects. The analysis notes Eliot’s documented respect for Kipling and identifies verbal and thematic correspondences, including shared unusual word choices like "flung" and "confused," as well as allusions to Keats’s poetry within both works. The article suggests that these accumulated similarities support the case that Kipling’s story informed aspects of Eliot’s poem, warranting annotation in scholarly editions of *The Waste Land*.
