Abstract
This article focuses on a 9-CD box set of recordings by the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, featuring a diverse repertoire spanning classical, modern, and arranged works primarily from the 1970s. The set includes standard chamber pieces by Brahms, Mozart, Debussy, and Dvořák, alongside modern American compositions by Carter, Ives, and Porter, as well as serial and neo-classical works by Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, and Stravinsky. Notable are the arrangements that reduce orchestral textures to smaller ensembles, such as Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 arranged by Webern and Berg’s Chamber Concerto arranged by the composer. While the collection offers rich performances and historical interest, especially for those familiar with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the compilation’s eclectic mix and limited contextual information on the music’s styles may affect its appeal to some listeners.
