Abstract

This article examines Muslim–Jewish encounters in the London borough of Barnet through the case study of a mosque’s planning application in Golders Green, a neighborhood with a significant Jewish population. It explores how local contestations and cooperation around the mosque’s establishment reflect broader hegemonic discourses involving racialisation, securitisation, and power dynamics between minority religious communities in superdiverse urban contexts. The study highlights intersecting narratives of fear and boundary maintenance alongside solidarity and cultural blurring, showing how minority groups engage in collective code-switching between inward communal identities and wider societal discourses. Drawing on ethnographic methods and discourse analysis, the research situates local Muslim–Jewish relations within diasporic histories and national political frameworks, complicating binary views of conflict and cooperation. Ultimately, it offers insights into how religious spaces become focal points for negotiating inclusion, exclusion, and intercommunal dynamics in multicultural cities.
