Abstract

Heavy rains and flooding caused by Super Typhoon Yagi have resulted in a rising death toll and extensive damage in northern Vietnam. As of Wednesday, 157 deaths and 139 missing persons have been reported, with over 101,000 houses damaged and 40,000 homes submerged in floodwaters. The heavy rains are expected to continue, and the government has warned of ongoing risks of floods and landslides. Global electronics manufacturers in flood-hit provinces, such as Apple and Samsung, have largely been spared major damage. The government has not provided overall damage estimates, but initial calculations suggest losses of around $95 million. The flooding has caused rivers to reach record-breaking levels, isolating thousands of people and causing flooding in some areas of Hanoi. China has agreed to coordinate water discharges from hydropower dams to assist with flood management. [Extracted from the article]
