Abstract
The article reviews *Mosaic Fictions: Writing Identity in the Spanish Civil War*, which examines Canadian and North American literary responses to the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) through an intersectional lens encompassing gender, race, sexuality, ethnicity, and religion. The book challenges traditional narratives of inclusivity within the Republican and International Brigades by highlighting marginalized identities and explores how the war served as a site for international leftist debates on difference, immigration, and desegregation. Organized thematically, the work analyzes diverse authors and genres across eighty years, addressing topics such as war romances, antiracist and anticolonial perspectives, women's experiences, and the cultural significance of poet Federico García Lorca's murder. The study situates the Spanish Civil War as an enduring symbol for radical politics and identity formation in both historical and contemporary contexts.
