Abstract

The article focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nursing workforce, highlighting significant losses among minoritized nurses, particularly Filipino nurses, and widespread trauma and burnout among those remaining. It reviews factors influencing nurses' intent to leave their jobs, including workplace stressors and leadership styles, and notes that psychiatric mental health nurses face similar challenges with some unique factors. Interventions such as resilience support programs show mixed results, with leadership engagement and organizational culture identified as critical to successful retention efforts. The article emphasizes the need for systemic changes, including adequate resources, fair compensation, and meaningful inclusion of nurses in decision-making, to sustain and strengthen the nursing workforce post-pandemic.
