Abstract

The article explores how marginalized communities, particularly queer, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, archive media during crises such as the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the concept of "urgent artifacts," which are ephemeral media created to foster community, visibility, and support in times of need. The author discusses the role of Queer. Archive.Work (QAW), a non-profit organization in Providence, Rhode Island, that serves as a space for producing and preserving these artifacts, emphasizing the importance of informal and independent archives in maintaining queer histories. The piece also reflects on the evolution of digital and analog media as tools for connection and survival amidst systemic failures, advocating for a collective approach to archiving that prioritizes equity and community engagement.
