Abstract

The article discusses the history of the parade and vaudeville drums and their uses. Topics include the use of both parade and circus drums as military field drums in Europe in the 16th through 18th centuries, the use of drums in circus and vaudeville shows to accent the performer's acts, and the recognition of George Way and William F. Ludwig as two of the most important figures in early 20th century drumming.
