Abstract

Naval power has become increasingly important in modern times due to the reliance on maritime connectivity for economic prosperity. Disruptions to undersea infrastructure have caused economic losses in various countries, highlighting the vulnerability of this connectivity. Authoritarian regimes and nonstate groups recognize the political value of targeting maritime connectivity and are investing in naval capabilities. Countries like China are rapidly expanding their naval fleets, aiming for maritime superiority. The US and its allies are also investing in their navies to meet the growing authoritarian challenge at sea, while some countries, like the US and Britain, face challenges in meeting naval demands. In a contested maritime century, navies are seen as an insurance policy for national security. [Extracted from the article]
