Abstract

The article describes how a lost 1855 trombone competition piece by Charles Gounod was rediscovered through two manuscripts and subsequently published in 2022. Topics include the Paris Conservatory examination tradition, the role of primary sources in musicology; and the editorial reconstruction of historical works.
