Abstract

The article focuses on the complex relationship between northern and southern representations in Hollywood, using D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation" as an example of the tension between production and plot in the depiction of the South. Topics include the historical complicity of the film industry in perpetuating southern stereotypes, the Freudian paradigm of the North as the "super-ego" and the South as the "id," and an analysis of Phil Morrison's film "Junebug."
