Abstract
This volume focuses on the writings of Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda defending the Spanish conquest of the Americas and his 1550 debate with Bartolomé de las Casas regarding the treatment of Indigenous peoples. It presents four key texts by Sepúlveda, including "Democrates secundas" (1544), which justifies Spanish policies as a natural-law-based punishment for Indigenous practices, and the "Apologia" (1550), where Sepúlveda argues that Indigenous peoples could be governed by more advanced societies to bring them Christianity. The book also covers the 1550 Valladolid disputation between Sepúlveda and de las Casas, highlighting their opposing views on Indigenous rights and Spanish imperialism, as well as subsequent polemics and accusations involving both figures. An extensive introduction and commentary contextualize the historical, legal, and theological dimensions of this significant 16th-century debate.
