Abstract
The article focuses on the 2022–23 calendar reform adopted by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), which transitioned to the Gregorian calendar for fixed feasts starting September 1, 2023, while retaining the traditional calculation of Easter. This reform, announced by the UGCC’s Synod of Bishops in February 2023, aligns the Church’s liturgical calendar more closely with Western Christianity and reflects broader political and cultural shifts in Ukraine, particularly in response to Russian aggression and a desire for European integration. The reform also parallels similar moves by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), signaling potential ecumenical cooperation and a reassertion of Ukrainian religious identity distinct from Russian Orthodoxy. Historically, the UGCC had maintained the Julian calendar as a symbol of identity, but the recent change emphasizes synchronization of church and civil life and the harmony of faith with modern scientific understanding.
