Abstract

The article explores how journalist Edwin Lawrence Godkin's writings on Hungary, liberalism, and Home Rule may have influenced writer Arthur Griffith's political thinking and the intellectual origins of political party Sinn Féin. Topics include Godkin's role as a transatlantic journalist and reformer, his advocacy of Irish self-government using the Austro-Hungarian model, and his growing pessimism about democracy in Gilded Age America.
