Abstract
The article argues that the National Park Service's interpretation of Independence National Historical Park distorts the U.S. founding by emphasizing condemnation especially of political leader George Washington and slavery over the founders' achievements and constitutional legacy. Topics include reinterpretations of Washington, the evolving symbolism of the Liberty Bell and ideological conflicts over how the U.S. history should be presented to the public.
