Abstract
This article discusses the rich record of Jacobite culture found in the manuscripts of Jacobite and Episcopal bishop Robert Forbes. Forbes spent years gathering eye-witness accounts of the 1745 rebellion and compiled them into a series of manuscript books called "the Lyon in Mourning." These manuscripts contain unique and valuable information about the rebellion, including details of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's expenditures, accounts of his escape from government soldiers, and narratives of the extremes of humanity and inhumanity during the rebellion. Forbes' manuscripts were eventually preserved in the National Library of Scotland, and Henry Paton's edition of the manuscripts has been a key source for Jacobite studies. The manuscripts have now been digitized and are available for public access, providing a firsthand look at this rich record of Jacobite culture. [Extracted from the article]
