Abstract
This article reviews a recording by Musica Perduta featuring works by Dario Castello and Girolamo Frescobaldi, highlighting the interplay between the high-register cornetto and the low-register bass violin. Bass violinist Renato Criscuolo emphasizes the historical use of these contrasting instruments in 17th-century music and notes the bass violin's limited modern revival. The ensemble demonstrates the bass violin's ability to match the cornetto's agility, particularly in fast passages, while maintaining stylistic authenticity. The recording also includes solo keyboard pieces performed on a historically significant organ restored in 2005. The review appreciates the expressive phrasing and historical performance practice evident in the ensemble's interpretation.
