Abstract

Turkish football clubs Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have canceled a planned match in Riyadh after Saudi Arabia intervened to prevent players from wearing T-shirts with the image of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. Ataturk established Turkey as a secular republic in 1923 and abolished the Islamic caliphate. The match was postponed due to disruptions in the organization, and it is unclear if it will be rescheduled. This incident has the potential to strain relations between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which have already been tense since the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.
