Abstract

The article provides an overview of the book "The World That Wasn't: Henry Wallace and the Fate of the American Century" by Benn Steil. The book challenges previous biographies of Henry Wallace, portraying him as power-hungry and self-absorbed. It argues that if Wallace had become president, the world would have been drastically different, with no Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, NATO, or policy of containment. The article, however, criticizes Steil's interpretation, highlighting Wallace's contributions to science, agriculture, and civil rights, and emphasizing his role in shaping the American Century.
