Abstract

This article focuses on demystifying the March 23 (M23) rebel group operating in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly North and South Kivu. It identifies the core grievance of M23 as discrimination against the Congolese Tutsi and other ethnic minorities, with the rebels seeking secession of the Kivus from the DRC. The paper highlights the complex regional dynamics involving alleged military and logistical support for M23 from Rwanda, which denies these claims, as well as involvement by Uganda and Burundi. It also discusses the historical context of conflict in the region, the role of natural resources, and the challenges faced by the Congolese national army. Despite international mediation efforts, including by Angola and the United Nations, the rebellion has persisted, causing significant displacement and humanitarian disruption.
