Abstract

The article discusses the book "Psychoanalysis and the New Rhetoric" by Daniel Adleman and Chris Vanderwees. It explores the historical and intrinsic significance of rhetoric for psychoanalysis, as well as the influence of rhetoric on eighteenth and nineteenth-century alienism. The book focuses on key thinkers such as Kenneth Burke, Sigmund Freud, and Jacques Lacan, but it is criticized for omitting significant work in forging connections between rhetoric and psychoanalysis. Despite this, the book makes contributions to rhetorical scholarship by engaging with concepts such as symbolic action, attitude, identification, and conspiracy theories. It is recommended for those interested in the confluence of psychoanalysis and rhetoric, particularly for those less familiar with psychoanalysis. However, it may not fully intervene in important conversations happening at the intersection of the two fields. [Extracted from the article]
