Abstract

This article focuses on the world premiere of *Nu Nah-Hup: Sacajawea's Story*, an opera developed by Opera Theater Oregon that aims to preserve Native languages by featuring Lemhi Shoshone, Mandan/Hidatsa, Quebecois French, English, and Native American Sign Language in a single performance. The thirty-five-minute scene, titled "Strike," dramatizes an event from August 14, 1805, exploring complex historical relationships with attention to cultural authenticity in costumes and music, including Native flute compositions by Hovia Edwards. The production incorporated historically accurate props from the collection of living historian Roger Wendlick and involved collaboration with Native communities and historians. Opera Theater Oregon is seeking partnerships and grants to expand the opera into a full-length work, with interest from larger opera companies.
