Abstract

The article reviews Teatro alla Scala’s opening of its current season with the original 1869 edition of Modest Musorgsky’s opera *Boris Godunov*, directed by Kasper Holten. The production features a visually striking set by Es Devlin, emphasizing themes of censorship and historical narrative, and presents a darker, more focused version of the opera without the Polish Act. Ildar Abdrazakov’s portrayal of Tsar Boris is highlighted for its vocal and dramatic depth, capturing the character’s public authority and private torment. The orchestra, led by music director Riccardo Chailly, and the chorus, conducted by Alberto Malazzi, received high praise for their expressive and nuanced performances. The supporting cast, including Ain Anger as the monk Pimen and Norbert Ernst as Prince Shuisky, also contributed to a powerful overall production.
