Abstract
This article reviews a recording of English solo songs spanning from Thomas Campion (1567–1620) to Thomas Arne (1710–78), with emphasis on Henry Purcell and his Restoration contemporaries Pelham Humfrey, John Blow, and John Eccles, plus excerpts from Handel's *Semele*. The recording features Grace Davidson (soprano) and Julian Perkins (harpsichord and chamber organ), showcasing historically informed performance practices including continuo accompaniment and ornamentation. Notable works include Purcell’s well-known songs and a suite of his keyboard music, with devotional pieces accompanied on chamber organ. The review highlights the performers’ technical skill and expressive phrasing, recommending the recording for both new listeners and those familiar with English Baroque song.
