Abstract
This article reviews the 2022 "Ultimate Cut" edition of *Caligula*, a controversial 1979 film originally directed by Tinto Brass and written by Gore Vidal, both of whom disowned the final product after producer Bob Guccione added explicit content. The new 178-minute version, assembled by art historian Thomas Negovan from original camera negatives, features previously unseen footage, a new score, and multiple alternate cuts, aiming to clarify the film's chaotic narrative and production history. The release includes extensive extras such as commentaries, interviews, and rare materials, though some original scenes remain excluded to maintain focus on Caligula's character arc. Despite these efforts, the film's fragmented nature persists, leaving the "Ultimate Cut" feeling incomplete and continuing the debate over its artistic coherence.
