Abstract

This article reviews Beverley Diamond's book *On Record: Audio Recording, Mediation, and Citizenship in Newfoundland and Labrador*, which examines the history and cultural significance of sound recording in Newfoundland and Labrador. The book situates sound recording within broader themes of citizenship, cultural identity, technology, and Indigenous expression, offering an interdisciplinary analysis that includes ethnomusicology, sound studies, and postcolonial perspectives. Diamond traces the development of the local music recording industry from early archival efforts to commercial growth in the mid-20th century, highlighting tensions between tradition and commercialism. The work also explores music recordings as active cultural processes rather than mere commodities, and includes a practitioner’s perspective on a collaborative recording event. This study contributes to understanding the complex social and political roles of sound recording in a specific regional context.
