Abstract
The final essay by Grundmann, "Learned and Popular Heresies of the Middle Ages", published in 1968, touches upon a discourse that is significant in the study of heresy, and the history of ideas more broadly: the circularities of influence between academic and popular cultural spheres. Deane's own valuable work on heresy, particularly on Beguines, has benefitted from its conversations with Grundmann's scholarship. "The History of Heresy", so Herbert Grundmann begins "The Profile ( I Typus i ) of the Heretic in Medieval Perception", the first of his essays in this collection, "is a subject that strikes modern ears as old fashioned" (p. 16).
