Abstract
This article focuses on the story of George Mulliner, a young Englishman afflicted with a severe stammer, as recounted by his relative, Mr. Mulliner. Despite his speech impediment, George leads a comfortable life supported by family wealth and enjoys country pursuits and crossword puzzles, notably sharing this hobby with Susan Blake, the vicar’s daughter, whom he loves. Seeking a cure, George consults a London specialist who advises him to speak to strangers daily to overcome his shyness-induced stammer. After a series of awkward encounters and a dramatic chase by villagers, George returns home, where Susan’s sympathy miraculously cures his stammer, enabling him to declare his love and become a confident public speaker. The narrative highlights themes of social anxiety, perseverance, and the transformative power of affection. [Extracted from the article]
