Abstract

This book examines the influence and engagement of Gnosticism in modern French literature and thought, analyzing how several authors grapple with themes of escaping or rejecting the world through a Gnostic lens. It explores figures such as Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Emmanuel Levinas, Georges Bataille, Maurice Blanchot, Emil Cioran, and Michel Houellebecq, highlighting their varied responses to Gnostic ideas related to nihilism, ethics, materialism, and metaphysical rebellion. The study situates these authors’ works within broader philosophical and theological contexts, emphasizing their complex and sometimes contradictory relationships with Gnosticism. While offering a broad overview of these engagements, the book provides limited close textual analysis, which may affect the depth of interpretation for some figures, notably Cioran.
